Wind measuring drone for competitions

A drone-based wind measuring system for hot-air balloon competition pilots has been developed. The aim was to design a cost-effective, simple to use device that delivers accurate numbers for wind speed and wind direction. The sensor consists of high-resolution encoders for wind direction and wind speed, an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a barometer. The measurements are broadcasted to one or multiple base units. The accuracy of the new system was validated with our high-precision OPTOkopter.

The wind measuring device is currently under test for ballooning competitions.
